If you are trying to create a memorable brand name, the logo design you use for your business will play a big part in it, but not necessarily straight away. It takes time and energy to get a brand well-known and it may never go international or even national, depending on what it is. That’s not to say the logo is any less important.
When it comes to logo design, it is important to be both creative and unique, even though the latter may difficult to achieve. At least you can put the various elements together in a way that makes it unique and stand out from the competition. A good logo is not created in 5 minutes simply by doodling on a piece of paper. You need to think what your company is about and try to incorporate elements of it into the logo. Apple has done this admirably with the missing ‘byte’ from its apple symbol.
Colour is another important part of logo design and must be used appropriately. A clash of bright colours would be inappropriate for the logo design of a funeral parlour, while dull greys and browns would not suit a company selling party favours. Nor should too many colours be included as the design will become fussy and difficult to replicate in print.
The typeface is another important part of good logo design. Even though some companies have managed without text completely, yet others use it to the exclusion of other design elements – think the coca cola label. Many are a combination of text and shape.
It tells a story
The logo has to tell something about the business, attract attention and be easily recognisable once it becomes better known. Even though you may have a mental image of what you want, a professional logo designer is needed to bring that logo design to fruition. They know about things like depth, space, colour, size and what works well for such a design. And if your mind is a blank, they may even be able to suggest something that gets your creative juices flowing.
In any case, you will need to tell them a lot about the aims and goals of your company for them to suggest a design that is suitable. You cannot rush this process, as eager as you may be to get the logo out to the general public. Taking time to make sure it is right is time well-spent.
Many logo designs may work well on paper, but remember that the logo of a company appears on many different types of media. It must also work in different sizes, which many fancier logos would not. When it comes to logo design, less is more; you only have to study a few famous logos to see that.
