Whether you are long-sighted or short-sighted, being free to go about your daily routine without having to worry about your glasses breaking or your contact lenses becoming uncomfortable, makes a huge difference.
That is exactly what Lasik eye surgery can do for anyone who has the surgery. Now, that is the good news, but the bad news is, it might be the case that laser eye surgery is not suitable for you. Unfortunately, there were a number of reasons why someone might not be recommended to have Lasik eye surgery.
This could be temporary, meaning it might be possible in the future, or it could be permanent meaning it can never be considered. Even so, there may be other options open to anyone for whom Laser eye surgery is not possible. One of these is Lasek eye surgery and another is intraocular lens implants
To check whether you fall into any of the categories of people where Lasik eye surgery is not suitable, here are some of those reasons.
You Are a Nursing Or Expectant Mother
Although pregnancy and having a child is a wonderful experience, sadly, it is not the time to be having Lasik eye surgery. The fluctuations in hormones that new and expectant mothers experience causes changes in the cornea, and there is also a risk that medication prescribed to help combat infection might harm unborn babies or newly born babies who are being nursed.
You Are In Poor Health
Whilst it should be a given that your eyes should be in good health, your general health also needs to be good. If you are in poor health and in particular have an illness or a condition that compromises your immune system it could be a barrier to having Lasik eye surgery. The reason is that it could prevent the surgery from healing, and there is a greater risk of infection.
You Are Taking Medication
Your health might be good, but do you take any medications on a regular basis? If so, it could be a problem with regards to Lasik eye surgery as some medications hinder the recovery process. Examples include steroids which may slow the healing process and acne treatments which are known to create dryness in the eyes.
Your Prescription Is Not Stable
If your vision is constantly changing and as a result so is your prescription, this is not a suitable situation to be in if you want Lasik eye surgery. Given that Lasik eye surgery makes permanent changes to your vision, unless you have had the same prescription for at least 12 months, your surgeon is likely to deny you the treatment until it has.
Your Cornea Is Misshapen or Too Thin
Lasik eye surgery creates a flap in the cornea, but it can only do so if the cornea is thick enough. If yours is not, an alternative treatment may need to be sought. Similarly, misshapen corneas tend not to be suitable for Lasik eye surgery due to the risk of you developing corneal ectasia, which weakens the surface of your eye.
